| I
love to read the fantastical short stories of Jorge
Luis Borges and
Italo Calvino. I also enjoy books about how human (and other)
bodies work and sometimes fail to work, and of course why. I also
find myself (like my dad) enjoying reading books about food, including
its history, science, and preparation. Here are a few of my favorites
from these categories. |
"Cosmicomics"
(Italo Calvino)
"The
Circular Ruins" (Jorge Luis Borges)
"How
We Live" (Sherwin Nuland)
"The
Medical Detectives" (Berton Roueche)
"The
Invisible Invaders" (Peter Radetsky)
"On
Food and Cooking" (Harold McGee; the history, chemistry,
and lore of food and cooking) |

I also love fun (and typically heavy) reference books. These are some
of my favorites. |
"Grzimek's
Encyclopedia of Mammals"
(5 gorgeous out-of-print volumes)
"The
Larousse Gastronomique"
(the famous French encyclopedia of food)
"Africana"
(an encyclopedia of Africa and African Americans; Henry Louis Gates,
J. and Kwame Anthony Appiah) |
