CNL Lunch Fatima Husain (NIDCD) Categorization of Speech and Non-Speech Sounds: Neural and Computational Investigations Thursday November 15th 2001, 12:30pm, 3416 Marie Mount Hall Categorization is fundamental to perception and cognition. In this talk I shall explore auditory perception and categorization through a series of modeling and experimental studies. The goal of the first experimental studies was to investigate the categorization of novel auditory (non-speech) categories in adult humans. The second study, which used fMRI, investigated the process of categorization via a short-term working memory task. I also will briefly discuss a model of the perception of English vowels by Spanish speakers. I will conclude by discussing an ongoing project to develop a computational model of auditory pattern recognition based on the auditory processing system of the brain. |
