Speech Segmentation by Native and Non-native Speakers

Thursday February 7th, 12:30pm, 3416 Marie Mount Hall

Speech segmentation is one of those problems that we simply shouldn't be able to solve - yet we do every day. There are no absolutely reliable indications of where one word ends and the next begins in continuous speech. I'll discuss psychophysical data collected from native English, native Spanish, and native Japanese speakers suggesting listeners use multiple segmentation cues in a flexible manner. Then I'll convince you (I hope) that the amplitude of an ERP component (N100) provides an on-line measure of fast, automatic speech segmentation. If there is enough time left I'd like to present a summary of the research project I plan to pursue over the next three years and hear any suggestions (recruit any help?) on those projects.
