Programs of Study

The CNL Lab is affiliated with Ph.D programs in the Department of Linguistics and in the interdepartmental Neuroscience and Cognitive Science Program (NACS). Both Ph.D programs offer competitive financial support for up to 5 years of study, through a combination of fellowships, research assistantships and teaching assistantships. The CNL Lab provides the opportunity for students to combine study and research in a variety of areas of psycholinguistics, cognitive neuroscience and linguistics.
There are also opportunities in the CNL Lab for undergraduate or postdoctoral research positions. Contact individual faculty members if you are interested in specific research projects.

Graduate students who come to the CNL Lab via the Ph.D program in Linguistics take required courses in a number of areas of linguistic theory (e.g. syntax, semantics, phonology) and psycholinguistics, and may be assigned TA duties in undergraduate courses in Linguistics. Please refer to the Department of Linguistics website for complete information on the program. Graduate students who come to the CNL Lab via the NACS program take core required courses in neuroscience, and may be assigned TA duties in undergraduate courses in Biology or Psychology. The NACS site has complete information on this program. Students in either program are expected to take courses in psycholinguistics and cognitive neuroscience, and have the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of elective courses in philosophy, computer science, cognitive psychology and neuroscience. Students in either program are eligible for research assistantships in all research areas of the CNL Lab. In addition, students admitted to the Linguistics program may also complete an optional neuro- and cognitive science certificate program offered by NACS. Both programs have had great success in placing graduates. To see what our recent graduates are up to, check 'Recent Graduates' in the 'People' section.

For general information about admission to the Linguistics Ph.D program, please contact Prof. Colin Phillips. For general information about admission to the NACS program, the contact person is Prof. John Jeka. For specific inquiries about pursuing a NACS degree in the CNL Lab also feel free to contact any CNL faculty member. Also, feel free to contact an individual faculty member if you have questions about specific research projects that they are involved in. All prospective students are strongly encouraged to take the GRE test and TOEFL test (for international students), and to apply early enough to receive full consideration for financial support, i.e. by early January.
